The Galaxy Z Fold 8 survived traditional durability testing surprisingly well—but there's one enemy Samsung's $1,900 foldable still doesn't completely keep out:
Fine dust and sand.
The Fold 8 carries an IP48 rating, and recent independent testing produced dramatically different results depending on the type and amount of debris used.
So how worried should Z Fold 8 owners actually be?
IP48 Doesn't Mean Dustproof
The important number is the “4.”
Samsung specifies that IP4X protects against solid objects 1.0 mm or larger. It does not mean the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is dustproof or sandproof. Samsung specifically advises against beach use in its detailed IP48 guidance.
That's important because everyday particles can be much smaller than 1 mm.
iFixit measured some of the fine particles used in its teardown experiment at around 0.04 mm, while beach-sand samples were around 0.16 mm—both well below that threshold.
What the Z Fold 8 Dust Tests Actually Show
iFixit's Fine-Dust Test Was Brutal
iFixit deliberately exposed the Z Fold 8 to very fine UV-reactive powder and repeatedly operated its hinge.
The result wasn't pretty.
The hinge eventually developed grinding and crunching noises and stopped opening normally. After disassembly, substantial powder was visible around the hinge mechanism.
However, there's an important detail: iFixit explicitly says this was not an official IP certification test, and its powder was much finer than typical beach sand.
So this shouldn't be interpreted as “every Fold 8 will fail when exposed to dust.
Another Dust Test Had a Very Different Result
JerryRigEverything subjected the Fold 8 to dust during a broader durability test, repeatedly opening and closing the device afterward.
In that test, the hinge continued operating properly.
That contrast tells us something useful:
The Z Fold 8 isn't automatically fragile around ordinary dirt—but fine particles entering the hinge remain a genuine vulnerability.
Samsung Has Strengthened the Fold 8
Samsung hasn't ignored durability.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 includes:

How to Protect Your Z Fold 8 Hinge
You don't need to treat your Fold like museum equipment. A few habits can reduce unnecessary risk:
- Avoid placing it directly on sand.
- Keep it away from dusty pockets and bags.
- Don't repeatedly fold the phone if you can see debris around the hinge.
- Gently clean the hinge with a soft, dry cloth.
- Never insert tools or compressed debris-removal objects into the hinge.
- Check the inner screen before closing it for trapped objects.
Samsung specifically recommends gently cleaning a dusty hinge with a soft, dry cloth and checking that objects aren't trapped between the displays before folding.
Tip: If the hinge suddenly starts grinding, clicking excessively, becoming misaligned or refusing to open normally, don't force it. Those symptoms can justify having Samsung inspect the device.
A Z Fold 8 case can't make the phone completely dustproof.
However, a well-designed case with Z Fold hinge protection can provide an additional physical barrier around exposed areas while also protecting against scratches, bumps and drops.
For everyday use, look for:
- dedicated hinge coverage
- raised inner and outer screen edges
- camera protection
- shock-resistant corners
- secure grip
- precise port openings
- a reasonably slim Z Fold case design
The best Z Fold case 2026 should protect vulnerable areas without making Samsung's thinner Fold unnecessarily bulky.
