A foldable phone with a huge inner screen doesn't have to feel like a brick in your pocket anymore.
Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 weighs just 201g, making it 52g lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 5 — while still giving users the large-screen experience that makes a Fold special.
So, how did Samsung remove so much weight without simply removing the features people want?
Foldables Have Always Had a Weight Problem
One of the biggest compromises with book-style foldables has traditionally been bulk.
You're carrying two screen sections, a complex hinge, a large battery, cameras and additional structural components — all inside one device.
Samsung's own progression shows how dramatically things have changed:
Galaxy Z Fold 5: 253g
Galaxy Z Fold 6: 239g
Galaxy Z Fold 7: 215g
Galaxy Z Fold 8: 201g
And Samsung didn't want the weight reduction to come at the expense of the Fold experience.
How Samsung Got the Fold 8 Down to 201g
Hundreds of Tiny Changes
There wasn't one magical component that removed all that weight.
Samsung says its engineers re-examined around 270 components and more than 180 types of auxiliary parts.
Some adjustments were measured down to just 0.001g and 0.1mm.
It shows how making a foldable significantly lighter requires optimizing practically the entire phone.
Tip: When comparing foldables, don't look at screen size alone. Weight and folded thickness can make a huge difference during everyday one-handed use.
Flex Titanium Changed the Display Structure
One of the biggest engineering improvements is Flex Titanium.
The Fold 8 uses an extremely thin titanium-alloy film within its foldable display structure. Samsung says the film is only tens of micrometers thick — roughly one-third the width of a human hair.
Other supporting metal structures are precision-machined to around 0.2mm, with some sections reaching approximately 0.15mm.
The result is a thinner structure without simply giving up the support needed by a folding display.
A Hinge Designed Around the Entire Phone
Samsung also continued refining its hinge engineering.
Instead of simply shrinking an existing hinge, the company says it balances strength, load distribution, internal space, durability and weight for each foldable design.
That's important because the hinge has to remain structurally stable through repeated folding while taking up as little space as possible.
Still a Big-Screen Foldable
The impressive part is that Samsung didn't turn the Fold 8 into a smaller phone just to reach 201g.
It still provides a 5.5-inch cover display and a large 7.6-inch main display, with a wider new form factor designed to make browsing, apps and entertainment more comfortable.
Samsung also lists the Fold 8 at only 4.5mm thick when unfolded.
Tip: If you're upgrading from an older Fold, you'll probably notice the combination of reduced weight and thickness more than either specification individually.
Don't Add the Bulk Back
There's an interesting problem after Samsung spends years removing every possible gram:
a bulky case can put some of that weight straight back.
For a 201g phone like the Galaxy Z Fold 8, an ultra-slim Z Fold 8 case makes a lot of sense.
Look for protection that focuses on the areas that actually need it:
- slim and lightweight construction
- reinforced corners
- raised camera edges
- hinge protection
- front-screen protection
- comfortable non-slip grip
- MagSafe or magnetic charging compatibility
The goal should be to protect your Fold 8 while preserving the lightweight feeling Samsung worked so hard to achieve.
Going from 253g on the Fold 5 to just 201g on the Fold 8 shows how quickly Samsung's foldable engineering is evolving.
The Fold 8 still gives you the big screen — it simply feels much less like you're carrying a big-screen device.
