Z Fold 7 vs Z Fold 6: Do Old Cases Still Fit?

Upgrading from a Z Fold 6 to a Z Fold 7? Before you toss your older cases aside or try reusing them, it’s essential to know whether they’ll still work—or whether you risk damaging your new phone.

What’s New: Size, Thickness & Screen Changes

Samsung’s official specs reveal several design shifts between Z Fold 7 and Z Fold 6:

  • The cover (external) screen increased from 6.3" to 6.5" on the Fold 7.

  • The Fold 7 is significantly thinner than Fold 6: Folded thickness is now ~8.9 mm vs much thicker in Fold 6.

  • When unfolded, Fold 7 also has a slimmer profile—some sources show a reduction in “interior thickness.”

Because of these changes, the structural fit (hinge spacing, edge clearances, screen alignment) is different enough to break compatibility in many cases.

Why Many Z Fold 6 Cases Won’t Fit Properly

Using an older case on the Fold 7 can introduce a host of issues:

  • Misaligned cutouts — camera bars, ports, buttons may not line up correctly

  • Gap or looseness — the thinner frame may leave loose areas or edges that don’t snap shut

  • Excess pressure — old cases may press too tightly into screens or the hinge

  • Hinge interference — even small shifts in hinge geometry can cause binding or wear

Indeed, some buyers and case guides (e.g. ThinBorne) already state:

“The Z Fold 6 case will not fit the Z Fold 7, as the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is taller, wider, and significantly thinner than the Fold 6.”

In Reddit threads, users attempt placing a Fold 6 case around a Fold 7, but report mismatches around the edges and screens.

What You Should Do Instead

To protect your device properly and maintain usability:

  • Use a case specifically designed for the Z Fold 7 — only full-fit cases guarantee alignment, hinge protection, screen clearance, etc.
  • Avoid retrofitting older cases unless they’re adjustable and tested for slight dimension shifts.
  • Choose models with hinge armor, raised bezels, and flexible internal screen support to safeguard both displays.
  • Consider lightweight options designed to hug the phone’s new slimmer profile without adding bulk.
